It belongs to the class of quinoline alkaloids derived from lupine alkaloids. With different crystallization conditions, matrine has four crystal forms: α - type: needle shaped, melting point 76 ℃; β - type: short prismatic shape, melting point 87 ℃; Gamma type: oily liquid that transforms into alpha type when left to stand; Delta type: leaf shaped or prismatic, melting point 84 ℃. These crystal forms can transform into each other and generate the same salts.

And this product is a natural plant pesticide with low toxicity to humans and livestock. It has good control effects on cabbage caterpillars, aphids, and spider mites on crops such as vegetables, apple trees, and cotton. After observation, matrine is effective against adults and larvae, but ineffective against eggs. The effect is slow, usually taking 3 days to take effect and reaching the peak of efficacy after about a week.

Matrine has various pharmacological effects such as antibacterial, anti asthmatic, and leukocyte boosting. Animal experiments have shown that it has inhibitory effects on certain malignant tumors, with oxymatrine being particularly prominent. Clinical observations have found that 0.3% to 1% matrine solution has strong inhibitory effects on Streptococcus pneumoniae, Shigella, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 7.5% to 10% oxymatrine also has inhibitory effects on Shigella, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. There are also reports that total alkaloids of Sophora flavescens have certain inhibitory and killing effects on pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Vibrio cholerae, Mycobacterium leprae, skin pathogenic fungi, and Leptospira.
