Levetiracetam is a pyrrolidone derivative. The antiepileptic effect of levetiracetam was evaluated in various epilepsy animal models. Levetiracetam has no inhibitory effect on the simple epileptic seizures induced by the maximum stimulation of current or various sedatives, and only shows weak activity in the sub-maximum stimulation and threshold test. However, the protective effect of pilocarpine and kainic acid on systemic attack secondary to focal attack was observed. Levetiracetam can inhibit the ignition process and ignition state of the rat model of complex partial seizures.

In vivo experiments showed that levetiracetam inhibited epileptic burst discharges in hippocampus, but had no effect on the excitability of normal neurons. Levetiracetam has no affinity for many known receptors, such as benzodiazepines, GABA, glycine, NMDA, reuptake sites and the second messenger system when the concentration is as high as 10 uM.
In vitro experiments showed that levetiracetam had no effect on voltage-gated sodium channels or T- type calcium currents in neurons. Levetiracetam does not directly facilitate GABAergic neurotransmission, but studies have shown that levetiracetam can antagonize the activity of GABA and glycine gated current negative regulators in cultured neurons.
