Chloroauric acid is also called "gold chloride tetrahydrate". Chemical formula HAuCl4·4H2O. Molecular weight 411.85. Yellow needle-shaped crystals. Toxic and corrosive. Soluble in water, ethanol, ether, slightly soluble in chloroform. Anhydrous chloroauric acid can be crystallized from ethanol solution. Decomposed by heat. Black spots are generated when exposed to light, and decomposed into gold trichloride when heated to 120℃. Brown gold can be precipitated by reaction with KI in alkaline solution. "Cinnamon purple" is generated when it meets tin dichloride in acidic solution. Methyl orange is used to make its aqueous solution purple, 1 to 3 drops of hydrochloric acid make it green, and it becomes lavender when it meets gold salt solution; adding cold potassium hydroxide solution generates gold hydroxide precipitation, which is reduced to gold powder when sulfur dioxide is passed.

Chloroauric acid is mainly used for trace analysis, alkaloid determination, electroplating and photography, gold powder making, porcelain coloring, red glass manufacturing, special inks and drugs for treating tuberculosis. It can also be used as an analytical reagent, trace analysis of rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs). It can be used for partial gold plating of semiconductor and integrated circuit lead frames, printed circuit boards, and electronic connectors.
Chloroauric acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H[AuCl4]. It forms hydrates H[AuCl4]·nH2O. Both the trihydrate and tetrahydrate are known. Both are orange-yellow solids consisting of the planar [AuCl4]− anion. Often chloroauric acid is handled as a solution, such as those obtained by dissolution of gold in aqua regia. These solutions can be converted to other gold complexes or reduced to metallic gold or gold nanoparticles.
The oxidation state of gold in H[AuCl4] and [AuCl4]− anion is +3. The salts of H[AuCl4] (tetrachloroauric(III) acid) are tetrachloroaurates(III), containing [AuCl4]− anions (tetrachloroaurate(III) anions), which have square planar molecular geometry. The Au–Cl distances are around 2.28 Å. Other d8 complexes adopt similar structures, e.g. tetrachloroplatinate(II)
