Ketoprofen, 2-(3-benzoyl)propionic acid, is synthesized from 3-methylbenzophenone, which is brominated to give 3-bromomethylbenzophenone. The resulting product is reduced with sodium cyanide to give 3-cyanomethylbenzophenone, which is reacted with diethyl carbonate in the presence of sodium ethoxide. The resulting cyanoacetate derivative is alkylated with methyl iodide, and the resulting product is hydrolyzed with acid to give ketoprofen.
