What is DL-Carnitine?

DL-Carnitine is a white crystalline powder that readily absorbs moisture. It is a compound synthesized from the amino acids lysine and L-Methionine. In living cells, it is required during the lipid degradation process for generating metabolic energy, as it transports fatty acids from the cytosol to the mitochondria. It is used as a nutritional supplement. Cardiogen exists in two stereoisomers. The biologically active form is DL-Carnitine, while its enantiomer is biologically inactive.

What is the mechanism of action of DL-Carnitine?

DL-Carnitine is an external racemic mixture composed of L-carnitine and D-carnitine. The physiological efficacy of the product mainly relies on L-carnitine among the components. This component acts as a transport carrier, transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix for β-oxidation reactions, thereby providing energy for the organism. In addition, in the renal environment, it can also transport propionyl coenzyme A into the mitochondria, promoting the steady progress of gluconeogenesis. Cardiogen itself does not have any relevant physiological activity and can antagonize the physiological efficacy of L-carnitine. If the concentration of DL-carnitine used is too high, it is likely to disrupt the original metabolic homeostasis in the body, thereby hindering the fatty acid oxidation process.

What is the difference between DL-Carnitine and L-Carnitine?

The most significant difference between Cardiogen and L-Carnitine lies in their stereochemistry and physiological effects. DL-Carnitine is a racemic product formed by a mixture of equal amounts of L and D forms. The D-Carnitine component itself has no physiological effect and will occupy the OCTN2 transport site, hindering the effective configuration of carnitine from performing the role of transporting fat for oxidation and decomposition in mitochondria. If such racemic products are consumed in excess, adverse reactions such as fatigue and abnormal heart rhythm may occur.
