Albendazole is one of the broadest deworming agents of benzimidazole with the strongest insecticidal action. It is mainly used for the treatment of single or mixed infections caused by roundworm, pinworm, whipworm, hookworm Americanus, hookworm duodenum, and steroidium, as well as mixed infections caused by tapeworm and these intestinal worms. Albendazole sulfoxide is the main metabolite of Albendazole, and the insecticidal activity of ABZ is mainly derived from ASON.
The two enantiomers of the same compound not only have different optical properties and physicochemical properties, but also have different biological activities, such as pharmacologically, inhibition of enzyme, binding to receptor and transfer of membrane are related to the stereochemistry of it. ASOX is a racemic enantiomer composed of D-ASOX and L-ASOX. The proportion of D-ASOX and L-ASOX in the host varies according to the host species, and whether there are significant differences in pharmacology, side effects and efficacy is not fully understood.

What is the use of albendazole sulfoxide?
The active metabolite of albendazole – Albendazole sulfoxide – binds to, and inhibits, the polymerization of beta-tubulin. This inhibits cytoplasmic microtubule formation and glucose uptake within the parasite. This leads to immobilization and death of adult worms and prevents hatching of eggs.
