What is Protocatechuic acid ?
Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid. It is a simple phenolic acid, which is the precursor of synthesizing other complex molecules, such as anthocyanin 3-O-β-D- glucoside and vanillin. Protocatechuic acid is found in edible vegetables, fruits, nuts, brown rice, pecans, tea, hibiscus and some Chinese herbal medicines.
Protocatechuic acid is white to brownish needle-like crystal with melting point of about 200℃ (decomposition). Soluble in hot water, slightly soluble in cold water. Decompose in boiling water and release carbon dioxide. The aqueous solution is green when it meets ferric chloride and dark red when it meets sodium bicarbonate.

How to extract Protocatechuic acid ?
Extracting protocatechuic acid from lilac leaves;
