Apixaban Powder, a selective activation X factor inhibitor, prevents blood clots but has a lower risk of bleeding than the older drug warfarin, which is used to prevent blood clots in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery.
Common side effects include bleeding and nausea. Other side effects may include bleeding around the spine and allergic reactions. Use is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use appears to be relatively safe in those with mild kidney problems. Compared to warfarin it has fewer interactions with other medications. It is a direct factor Xa inhibitor.
Apixaban is used to treat or prevent deep venous thrombosis, a condition in which harmful blood clots form in the blood vessels of the legs. These blood clots can travel to the lungs and can become lodged in the blood vessels of the lungs, causing a condition called pulmonary embolism. This medicine is used for several days after hip or knee replacement surgery while you are unable to walk. It is during this time that blood clots are most likely to form.
Apixaban is also used to prevent stroke and blood clots in patients with certain heart rhythm problem (eg, nonvalvular atrial fibrillation).

Can clopidogrel and apixaban be given together?
Apixaban powder causes bleeding, as can Clopidogrel ; concurrent use might increase the risk of developing this effect. Manufacturer advises use with caution or avoid.
When should apixaban be stopped?
Patients should not stop taking apixaban without first talking to their doctor or dentist. Apixaban may need to be stopped for one or two days before any planned surgery, dental or medical procedure.
