22 bipyridine produced is obtained by the reaction of pyridine with ferric chloride.70g anhydrous pyridine was mixed with 13g anhydrous ferric chloride,the mixture was heated at 300℃ for about 35h in a closed tube. After cooling, the reactant solidified into red-black crystals, opened the sealed tube, and washed out the red-black solution of the solid with a small amount of hot water. Extract to remove oily impurities. After neutralization with sodium bicarbonate, excess pyridine was removed by steam heating. Then, the mixture was adjusted to strong alkalinity, 22 bipyridine was steamed out by steam. Acidifying the distillate, evaporating and concentrating, adding sodium hydroxide, extracting, and obtain crude product. The crude product is recrystallized with ethyl acetate and decolorized with activated carbon to obtain the pure product.

In addition, the product can also be prepared by the reaction of α-methylpyridine with purification.Then, the mixture was adjusted to strong alkalinity, and 22 bipyridine was steamed out by steam. Acidifying the distillate, evaporating and concentrating, adding sodium hydroxide, extracting,to obtain crude product. The crude product is recrystallized with ethyl acetate and decolorized with activated carbon to obtain the pure product.
