Product description

Selamectin powder is produced by the fermentation of a new strain of Streptomyces aviviae and is synthesized by the chemical modification of dolamectin. The action mechanism of Selamectin is the same as that of other abamectin drugs. On the one hand, selamectin can act as GABA agonist to trigger the release of presynaptic GABA, which in turn causes the increase of membrane permeability to Cl¯; on the other hand, selamectin can open the chloride ion channels controlled by glutamate, which causes the increase of Cl¯ permeability and leads to membrane potential hyperpolarization. Thus blocking the transmission of nerve signals, causing rapid, fatal and non-spastic neuromuscular paralysis and death.

Since flukes and tapeworms do not have GABA neurotransmitter and glutamate-controlled Cl¯ channels, Selamectin has no repellent effect on them. The drug binding site of invertebrates is in peripheral tissues, while the drug binding site of mammals is in the central nervous system. Due to the effect of the blood-brain barrier, such drugs rarely enter the brain tissue, so such drugs are safe for most mammals.

Is selamectin safe for humans?

Selamectin powder treats and prevents infections of heartworms, fleas, ear mites, sarcoptic mange (scabies), and certain types of ticks in dogs, and prevents heartworms, fleas, ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms in cats. It is structurally related to ivermectin and Milbemycin oxime. Selamectin is not approved for human use.

Is selamectin the same as ivermectin?

Both drugs treat existing helminth infections by inducing paralysis in the parasites and thereby preventing normal life functions. Ivermectin is used internally, while selamectin is used externally.

Does selamectin deworm?

Selamectin is a novel semisynthetic avermectin produced by Streptomyces avermitilis. In the United States, it is approved for the prevention of canine heartworm, flea control, deworming, and the treatment of sarcoptic mange and Otodectes cyanotis in dogs.
