Loses all crystal water at 100℃, decomposes above 100℃. Easy to weather in dry hot air. Mildly deliquescent in humid hot air. Soluble in water and turpentine; insoluble in ethanol. Decomposes in strong acid. It is easily oxidized and carbonized by oxygen and carbon dioxide when exposed to air for a long time.

Sodium thiosulfate powder is a commonly used chemical raw material. It is used as a fixer in photography, film and printing platemaking. It is used as a reducing agent in leather making. In papermaking and textile industry, it is used to remove residual bleach and as a mordant. In medicine, it is used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. In water treatment, it is used as a dechlorinating agent and bactericide for drinking water and wastewater; a copper corrosion inhibitor for circulating cooling water; and a deoxidizer for boiler water system. Sodium thiosulfate is a sulfur donor with active sulfur atoms.
