What is Ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is an inhibitor of COX-1 and COX-2, with IC50 values of 13 μM and 370 μM, respectively, and has anti-inflammatory activity.
Ibuprofen also has anti-inflammatory properties and belongs to a class of therapeutic drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAID. Like acetylsalicylic acid, another NSAID and acetaminophen, ibuprofen works by inhibiting the activity of a class of enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX). What is the biological activity of ibuprofen?
In Vitro: Ibuprofen powder inhibits COX-1 and COX-2, which converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2(PGH2). Its function is similar to that of aspirin, indomethacin and other NSAIDs in whole cells, broken cells and purified enzyme preparations.
