What is Barbituric acid?
Barbituric Acid is formed by condensation of malonic acid and urea, which has no anesthetic effect. However, after the C2 and C5 atoms are replaced by different genes, various barbiturates can be generated. For example, the oxygen in C2 is replaced by sulfur, that is, thiobarbital is generated.
Barbituric Acid powder is white crystalline powder. Melting point 245℃, dehydration and decomposition at 280℃. Soluble in hot water and ether, insoluble in cold water and alcohol. React with metals to form salts.

What are the mechanisms of action of Barbituric acid?
Barbituric acid acts on different levels of the central nervous system and has nonspecific inhibitory effect. Its sedative and hypnotic mechanism may be related to its selective inhibition of thalamic reticular ascending activation system, thus blocking the conduction of excitement to cerebral cortex. Its anticonvulsant effect is achieved by inhibiting synaptic transmission in the central nervous system and increasing the threshold of electrical stimulation in the motor area of cerebral cortex.
