Amikacin sulphate (BB-K8) is a semisynthetic, water-soluble kanamycin aminoglycoside derivative that binds to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, causing mRNA misreading and thus preventing the bacteria from synthesizing proteins essential for their growth. Amikacin sulfate has a high affinity for the 16S rRNA of the bacterial 30S ribosome, causing mRNA mistranslation and preventing the bacteria from synthesizing proteins that are important for their growth.

Product Application
Amikacin sulphate is a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic with an antibacterial spectrum similar to that of gentamicin. It is effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Proteus. It is also effective against other aminoglycoside antibiotic-resistant strains. Amikacin sulfate is an anti-infective drug used to treat urinary tract infections, sepsis, skin infections, bone and joint infections, pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
Amikacin is most often used for treating severe infections with multidrug-resistant, aerobic Gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, E. coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, and Serratia. The only Gram-positive bacteria that amikacin strongly affects are Staphylococcus and Nocardia.
Amikacin can also be used to treat non-tubercular mycobacterial infections and tuberculosis (if caused by sensitive strains) when first-line drugs fail to control the infection. It is rarely used alone.The safety and efficacy of amikacin liposome inhalation suspension, an inhaled treatment taken through a nebulizer, was demonstrated in a randomized, controlled clinical trial where patients were assigned to one of two treatment groups.
