Glimepiride powder is a white or white-like odourless crystal with the chemical formula of C24H34N4O5S. This product is soluble in chloroform, very slightly soluble in ethanol, almost insoluble in water or 0.1mol/L hydrochloric acid solution and very slightly soluble in 0.1mol/L sodium hydroxide solution. What is the mechanism of action of this product?

Glimepiride is the third generation sulfonylurea long-acting antidiabetic drug. Like all sulfonylureas, it is an insulin secretagogue, and the main mechanism of its hypoglycemic effect is to stimulate islet β cells to secrete insulin, partially improve the sensitivity of surrounding tissues to insulin, and induce the increase of insulin receptor activity in cells to lower blood sugar.
