Allopurinol powder and its metabolite alloxanthine both inhibit leucopurine oxidase, thereby inhibiting uric acid synthesis, reducing blood uric acid concentration, and reducing urate deposition in bones, joints, and kidneys. It is clinically used for 1. Primary and secondary hyperuricemia, especially hyperuricemia caused by excessive uric acid production. 2. Recurrent or chronic gout; 3. Uric acid kidney stones and (or) uric acid nephropathy; 4. Hyperuricemia with renal insufficiency.
In recent years, the study of charge transfer (CT) complexation of important drugs has attracted much attention due to their important physical and chemical properties. In this study, CT complexes obtained from the reaction of the antihyperuricemic drug allopurinol (Allop) with organic p-acceptors [picric acid (PA), dichlorodicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ), and chloranil (CHL)] were prepared, isolated, and characterized by a series of physicochemical methods,
such as IR, Raman, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. The stoichiometry of the complexes was verified by elemental analysis. The results showed that all the complexes formed were based on a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. This study showed that the complexation of Allop with DDQ or CHL receptors resulted in a direct p®p* transition, while the molecules of Allop and PA were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions.
